The entire Subnova network will be down pending an IP Address changeover for all our servers hosted at Subnova Core.
This will affect all Subnova hosted websites, email, the IM network, and all but one of the IRC Network servers.
We are changing IPs due to finally upgrading our upstream connection to fiber-optic cable!
We're going to have significantly more upstream bandwidth available. Starting off, we're going to have 3Mbps/3Mbps. Depending on revenues from hosting sources, we can upgrade to 8Mbps/8Mbps.
Once I have a firm date as to the changeover, I'll post again.
Right now, they're running the backbone cable past Subnova Core. My estimated time to installation is about 2 to 3 weeks from now.

UPDATE 20080429.211644
Right now, it's looking like sometime next week, we'll be switching over to the fiber network.
Uberwoot.
UPDATE 20080512.194430
Fiber router installed. Splicer is expected in the next day or two.
Looking like the switchover will be Friday.

We are currently in the progress of moving all of the websites and services from the Alpha-Fox server "Poseidon" to the new Alpha-Fox server "Frenzy". This is because of several reasons, one being that the CPU usage on the server "Poseidon" is way too low.
Any services in Second Life (this includes all OS Labs services and DHD registrations) will be down while the DNS switches to the new server.
We will update once the move has been finished. |

I've personally had to deal with these, and found them somewhat amusing. At this point however, they are really starting to get annoying.
Just today (which is why I am posting this), I found a *new* website that is blocked by this wonderful system, http://www.subnova.com/forum/.
http://www.subnova.com/forum/ has been categorized as Hate Speech. It has been blocked per the South Milwaukee School District Internet Usage Policy for group HS Students.
If you feel you reached this page in error, please contact your System Administrator.
So, what hateful speech are you spreading 3of9? :P |

A friend of mine has started a really cool website, XpFTW.
This website may remind you of other websites that promise you free music players or computers or whatnot... but this one is for serious. In a matter of 3 days, I've already racked up 11,000xp.
Why do you care about Xp? Because you can then trade it in for Xbox Live™ time cards, Microsoft Points™, game time cards of other popular MMOs, and even Linden Dollars™ in Second Life®!
The offers are simple, and getting better every day.
XpFTW is currently in beta, but that just means you can help shape the site to be even better.
So, go check it out. |

The SGMI is reporting bad data right now.
Recent grid server updates have cause some strange behavior in the data aquisition software we're running.
I hope to have time to rework the software tonight and tomorrow to improve self-repairing of the database.
More information will be posted as it becomes available.
Update: 20080313.231626
The system has been manually refreshed, and is now reporting valid data.
Work continues to make the system fully automated and handle grid failures better. |

As of yesterday, the Alpha-Fox server daedalus was decommissioned. This was for a few reasons.
- We frequently had downtime due to DNS and IP changes.
- Whenever something went wrong with the router, we had problems.
- Whenever we had the problems above, it took until the weekend to repair.
The server itself is being sold on eBay currently, hopefully to go towards my I-want-a-MacBook-Pro-Fund. We shouldn't miss it too much.
Current Alpha-Fox Servers:
Chimera
Poseidon

Lately we have had a lot of issues with the Alpha-Fox server Daedalus. As such, we (meaning I) have come up with a solution.
All DNS has been removed from the server. We encountered a problem with the current DNS servers and are planning a move to a better one. The server has been backed up, and is being reinstalled from scratch. This should solve a lot of network address problems we have had, as well as issues with other services on the server.
I also plan on resetting the router and setting everything up from scratch, making sure to take necessary precautions. As a final measure, I am creating a script that will run, every 5 minutes on the server, to update the IP address with SEVERAL sources. This will of course check the IP address to make sure it doesn't update a fake one (yes, I'm looking at you router that updated a default IP address).
I'm really sorry for all the inconvenience this has caused people -- and I hope to be back up in full force soon. Updates will be posted as I have them.
Update (20080216.235552): Project Resurrection seems to be coming along well. Currently configuring the mail server.
Update (20080217.030748): DNS can shove it. We are currently waiting for all the DNS to resolve, because DNS is oh so fun (not really).
Chimera is on its way to being ready, once 3of9 comes up with a solution to Forbidden errors.Project Resurrection (a.k.a. Daedalus) is on its way to being finished. I haven't touched the mail server yet -- mail servers need to die. The server known as Poseidon (hosted with futurehosting.biz) still needs a lot of work, and is waiting on DNS to resolve for that work to continue.
I will keep you posted as things progress.
Update (20080217.175449): DNS is finally working, both in Second Life and outside of Second Life. I'm not sure how the dynamic part of the DNS will work -- but it's fine for now.
Chimera is finally up, but we are awaiting 3of9's return so he can set the max import size higher than 2MB. Daedalus is on its way, still trying to do the mailserver. Poseidon still needs a lot of work.
It's still coming along :)
Update (20080217.231813): Well, DNS will be crap for 72 hours from this post. Work on the servers will continue so that it is ready when DNS stops being crap.
Sorry for all the downtime guys, but just think, all of this work is to get RID of the downtime :D
Update (20080219.025445): You will all be happy to know that DNS is back up. Everything is routing to the proper servers. YAY!
Mostly everything is back up on the websites, except we had a small problem with our SQL download. We are making a way to fix that as we speak.
Instead of trying to repair 0.9.7 for the server, we are just going to go ahead with 0.9.8. Look on the good side, you will have a brand new gate to play around with.
We should be done by end-of week if all goes well.
Resolution(20080221.030435): Group Notice from Zachary Carter:
After a few server problems and a loss of our entire user database, we are back -- and with a new gate version!
Here's the new gate, your old gates will NO LONGER WORK. Test the hell out of it, find bugs, report them on the forums.
Here's the URL:

This situation has now been marked "Resolved"

The Alpha-Fox webserver is down again.
At this moment, I know as much as you do... I'll be posting updates as I get them.
Update 20080212.230206 - Group Notice From: Zachary Carter
I know you are really sick of these, as are we.
As a temporary (and I strongly emphasize temporary) solution, we are going to move the gate network to the Subnova Core hosted server "chimera" until such time that I can get a static IP at my home, or we raise enough money to buy our new servers.
I will try everything in my power to get us back running today. I am truly sorry for all the problems we have had.
Zachary Carter
Update 20080212.230834 - Group Notice From: Zachary Carter
Despite my best efforts, I was unable to bring up the server over the phone. There is a SLIM chance that I will be able to get to the server tomorrow (Wednesday 13 February 2007) but it is unlikely. Due to these issues, daedalus.alpha-fox.com is going to be offline until Friday at approximately 5:00 P.M. Central Standard Time.
Update 20080216.000624 - Zachary Carter
Alpha-Fox is back online. The problem was identified as another computer on the network taking the server's IP address, causing the computer to be inaccessible. Steps have been taken to prevent this from happening again.
The plan to move to Chimera is still in effect. But for now, we're back.

Alpha-Fox.com went offline quite unexpectedly earlier today.
This affects the Alteran Stargate Network, Alpha-Fox Terminals, and the Subnova Map UUID API.
The ASN and all other Alpha-Fox systems are down.
The Map data will not be updated until the website is restored.
Our network fungineers are working around the clock to resolve the situation.
Sorry for the inconvenience.
Update 20080202.224804
The router for the server decided to go romping around the surface of the moon.
It has been reprimanded and is now back at work.
Update 20080204.034507
Server appears to be on the moon again.
Trying to get it back to Earth. Sorry about this.
Update 20080204.155304
Carter has been contacted. However, he has no access to the machine until this Friday.
We are working on setting up a "better" solution for hosting the network at this time. It involves parting together a machine that has been many other machines in the past. Hopefully, it will be more reliable.
For those of you who are wanting to help fix the situation correctly, we have set up a fund for the purchase of dedicated servers to run the network from Subnova Core's hosting service. You can contribute to the fund at the Network HQ in Sonamu's Retail Center. A one-time donation of L$2700 per gate owner would get us to our goal (the cost of the new servers).
Update 20080204.181257 - Group Notice From: Zachary Carter
We created a virtual page on subnova.com so the gates would shut up and stop resetting.
We have a few solutions for this, assuming I can get a database dump:
1) We can keep daedalus, which wouldn't be a big deal we would just need to make sure that the cronjob is working -_-
2) We can move the servers to the Subnova server "Chimera" which has a static IP
3) We can put the gate network on the shared server "frenzy" from DreamHost
Will keep you posted.
Update 20080209.025644
Well, the server is back up... but guess what...
The DNS host is down!
Thanks for visiting Sitelutions. We are currently performing network or server maintenance and expect to become fully operational shortly. Thanks for your patience, and thanks for choosing Sitelutions.
WTF?!
Update 20080209.031640
As far as I can tell... everything is working again.

Friday, January 18, 2008.
That is the day that FM radio died for me.
On that day, WNNX 99.7 (99x) became Q100.5 "pop".
Cumulus, who had purchased the station about 18 months ago... has murdered FM radio in Atlanta.
Those few who remain, are now struggling to keep 99x alive via Internet Streaming and HD-Radio. They have many hurdles to overcome, and must keep the stream access as open as possible. It is the only way they can ever hope to survive this.
Hopefully, if they can pull the numbers they need... they can get their rightful 99.7FM transmitter back in the hands of people who revolutionised music. 99x was responsible for numerous artists, such as Matchbox 20, being discovered.
Living so far from Atlanta... I normally listen to 99x via the website stream (which isn't available outside of a video stream right now)... when I got in my car that has a working radio... and heard Q100... I cried.
I've since read about what happened behind the dark curtain. How everyone who made 99x what it was... was treated... and shown the door.
I just hope that those few who are left can keep the flame burning... and get an MP3 stream up. There are 50,000 potential listeners at any given time in Second Life alone... and I would set my land's stream to 99x in a heartbeat.
Don't exclude your market by restricting them to Windows Media... to survive, you must be accessable.
Good luck, 99x.com.
I am 99x. |

Numerous upgrades have been installed.
The Jabber server now sports fancy new gateway transport services, so you can register your AIM, Yahoo, MSN, ICQ... and even get into IRC all from a single Jabber client!
The Anope services on Subnova IRC have been updated.
MySQL has been upgraded.
Andromeda (the webserver) is in the process of being upgraded to Fedora 8.
Sorry from the lack of warning with this massive pile of upgrades. My time has become very randomly available... I'll explain why Soon.
Cheers!
Update: 20080125.152022
Andromeda is now running Fedora 8.
A speed boost can be seen in just about everything now.

I installed a big pile of updates last night to Andromeda (the server that runs this website)... and inadvertently made it load the datafiles off the development area files. This means that everything is being pulled across the network from another server, which Andromeda doesn't really like doing for some reason. Normally, the files are pulled from a syncronized directory on the internal drive, which is significantly faster.
I will correct this as soon as I get home, at approx 2100 UTC.
UPDATE 20080114.223155
I've fixed the file directory issue. However, some of the updates failed to run. I am running them again, so the site may become slow or unavailable in the next few hours. |
