Alright I've heard alot of complaints of lag, or stuttering, and such. Now this may be possible, chances are what actually is happening is that your settings are not optimized for the best gameplay. The first thing you need to do is to turn off vsync, this seems to improve performance for most people. Now if you are playing mostly single-player you can attempt to keep the settings where they are, but if you want the smoothest gameplay possible you should turn off decals. Yeah I know it isn't nearly as cool without the blood stains, but it really does improve your performance quite a bit.

Decals in multiplayer are a minor hit due to the fact that you don't have nearly as much blood coming out of bodies. If you are really serious about Multiplayer you should probably turn off specular. Things aren't as pretty without it, but if you have slowdown in particular with indoor areas turning off specular will help you.

Now if none of those work, there is another option! You can force Halo to use older versions of pixel shaders, to do this you need to get properties on the alias to Halo, and add onto the string outside the quotes either -use11 or -use14. These designate that the engine should use either 1.1 pixel shaders or 1.4. Also to note you should add a couple of other variables on there to make your game a little more functional. Here is what mine looks like:

"C:Program FilesMicrosoft GamesHalohalo.exe" -console -screenshot

The -console gives you access to surprise the console in Halo, to access it hit "`" or "~" whatever you want to call it, then hit tab to list all the commands, as it so happens if it isn't an sv command you can only use it in singleplayer or at the startup screen. The command that really interest us is the rasterizer_fps this gives us an FPS readout on the screen.

The -screenshot gives us the ability to take screenshots that are stored in a folder by hitting the printscreen key.

Well that is about it, if these don't work for you, you may need to try turning down the resolution. Halo is one of the few games to really utilize all those nice new things on your video card, you may have to make some sacrifices visually to be able to have the smoothest gameplay.
