Microsoft® .NET Passport for Bungie.net Frequently Asked Questions

If you?re brand new to .NET Passport, you should first visit the Official Microsoft .NET Passport Q&A - HERE. Additional information can be found on the .NET Passport main website which is located here.

Q So what?s the deal? Why is Bungie.net now using .NET Passports for login?
A The Bungie.net you know and love today has some big changes in store for it - the first of all being a new account system. Before we can fully implement many of the exciting new features we're working on, we need to make some big changes to our existing framework. Moving to the .NET Passport login solution will open up new possibilities for the future.

Compared to our other option - having people send a fax to the Webmaster, .NET Passports are the best choice. There are many things about the new Bungie.net that we can't tell you right now, but trust us - you will want to create a .NET Passport and you will be thankful you did.

Think of it this way - the new Bungie.net will be one huge online party for all of our fans and your .NET Passport is your invitation. If you don't get one, you'll be reduced to standing on a ledge in the alley trying to catch a glimpse through a window. Nobody wants that now, do they?

Q What are these big changes of which you speak? Tell me more, I must know!
A The plans for the new Bungie.net are a closely guarded secret known only by a select few individuals whom have elected to have their families and loved ones sequestered in a complex deep in Siberia. If someone runs their mouth, appropriate actions will be taken. It?s a small price to pay for the chance to work on something this cool but our families may have different opinions.

If you?ve been to Xbox.com recently, then you may have already noticed that you can now link your .NET Passport to your Gamertag which allows you to interact with Xbox Live via the web. The XSN Sports site also builds off of this new relationship. Let?s leave it at that for now, ok?

Q I don?t HAVE to get a .NET Passport, right?
A No, you don?t HAVE to do anything? well, except for eating, drinking and breathing. If you don?t create a .NET Passport account and link it to Bungie.net then you will continue to be anonymous which means you won?t be able to participate in the 7th Column, post in the forums, utilize the messenger, submit news or events, or basically do much of anything on this site besides read stuff. If that?s all you want, then by all means, skip the registration.

Q What if I already have a .NET Passport?
A If you?ve already created a .NET Passport for use on other sites then you?re already half way through completing your new Bungie.net registration. When you login to Bungie.net for the first time, simply enter your existing .NET Passport information and then proceed to link it to your Bungie.net screen name.

Q What if I have more than one .NET Passport?
A Pick one and use it for Bungie.net. If you?ve already registered your .NET Passport at Xbox.com or XSNsports.com, it is highly recommended that you use the same one here.

Q How does the .NET Passport work?
A This question is best answered by visiting the Official .NET Passport Q&A site. Basically, the .NET Passport creates a secure and easy way for websites to verify your identity through one global account.

Q Does this mean that I must have a valid email address to create and use a Bungie.net account?
A Yes. Any .NET Passport used with Bungie.net must have a valid email address. When you sign up for a .NET Passport, a confirmation message will be sent to the email address you provided. Before you can use the .NET Passport with Bungie.net, you?ll need to follow the instructions in the confirmation email. If you attempt to use a non-validated .NET Passport, our system will inform you that you need a validated email address and it will resend the validation email to you for follow-up.

Q Does this mean that everyone can see my email address and personal information?
A No. Your email address and all of your personal information in your .NET Passport profile is not accessible by our systems. All Bungie.net does is receive a verification that you are the owner of this passport and thus your login is validated. Even if we did have access to this information, privacy is a big concern for all of us and we will never capture, use or distribute any information about our users without their consent. Please see our full privacy statement for more details.

Q If I come to Bungie.net from another .NET Passport enabled site, do I have to login again or will Bungie.net already recognize me?
A If you arrive at Bungie.net after activating your .NET Passport at another site (or through the integrated login features of Windows XP), you will still need to click the ?Sign In? button at the top of our page. However, you will not have to re-enter your email address or password. One click is all it will take.

Q I heard that there were lots of security holes and problems with .NET Passport...
A The .NET Passport is used by some of the top businesses and websites all across the world. The technology is proven and security is foremost in the mind of Microsoft and its engineers. For more info, please visit the .NET Passport Q&A mentioned at the top of this page.

Q Will my .NET Passport login become my Bungie.net alias?
A No. The email you enter as part of your .NET Passport is only used to create your actual passport and identify you as the holder of that passport. Once you create your passport and log in for the first time on Bungie.net, you?ll be given the option to link your existing Bungie.net screen name OR create a brand new one if you don?t already have a Bungie.net screen name.

Q I?ve been a member of Bungie.net for a while... Does this mean I lose my screen name and anything I?ve created? (i.e. my chapter, forum posts, etc..)
A Not at all. If you already have a valid Bungie.net screen name, you will have a chance to enter it during the initial registration process. Once your new .NET Passport is linked to your Bungie.net screen name, its business as usual except you?ll use the .NET Passport to login.

However, if you do not go through the new registration process and update your screen name with a .NET Passport, our system will no longer know who you are. You will be known as ?NoPassport###?, where ### is some arbitrary set of numbers. So, everything you?ve created thus far on Bungie.net will be attributed to a generic anonymous user. Once you link your .NET Passport, though, everything will reappear, with your name attached appropriately.

Q What if someone else takes my Bungie.net screen name? How will it know that they aren?t me?
A If you?ve already got a current valid Bungie.net screen name, you?ll need to use your same password in order to verify your identity. Your original screen name is unique and nobody will be allowed to pick the same name. It?s all some complicated stuff that?s happening under the hood ? for now, just trust us ? you will retain your unique identity.

Q What if I don?t want to keep my old login? Can?t I just create a new one?
A No. In keeping with our existing ?Terms of Use?, Bungie.net users are only permitted to have one account. Your old account will still exist and everything you?ve done and created will be linked to that account. You are who you are. The only people who will have the ability to change their alias are users who currently have an invalid or non-unique screen name.

Q Say what? Non-unique? Invalid? It worked originally on Bungie.net, right?
A Do to changes in our database structure (again in preparation for the great things to come), Bungie.net screen names are being handled differently than before. Spaces will no longer be used when considering if a name is unique or not. For example, MasterChief and Master Chief are now treated as the exact same screen name. The space was all that separates them and now spaces aren?t valid unique identifiers.
&nsp;
You can, however, use spaces when creating your new Bungie.net screen name but underneath the hood, the spaces are removed. So, if you create a new name as Mr Chief, it will actually be mrchief in the database. This means that any other variety of this name using spaces will not be allowed - m rchief, mrc hief, mr chi ef, etc... are all considered the exact same name.

One other change is that screen names can?t include any punctuation characters. This means that if you used things like <, /, [, }, &, %, ^, @, -, _, or any other character besides a number or letter, you will be forced to change your screen name.

Q So what about all the existing members who share the same name but they are only different due to spaces or characters? My name is Spartan 117 and my friend?s screen name is Spartan117. Do we both have to change names?
A Currently, there are about 25,000 accounts that will have to be renamed due to spaces or invalid characters. Whether or not you are affected will be determined by two things ? how long you?ve had your screen name and how frequently you visit Bungie.net.

In the example above, the first person to create any variation of Spartan 117 will have first dibs at holding onto the existing name. Consider the following names:

a) Spartan117
b) Spartan 117
c) Spartan1 17

Under the new system, each of these names will be the same. Priority for retaining the original name will be granted based on the amount of time a user has held the name AND how recently they?ve used it. So, if account A was formed in 2001, B in 2002 and C in 2003, the owner of account A will retain the Spartan117 screen name and the other two will be forced to select a new name. If A & B were both in 2001, then whoever recorded the last login on Bungie.net will be granted the right to use the screen name.

Q What if the name holder never decides to migrate their account to the new system? What happens to the name then?
A The user that is granted the right to maintain the screen name (account A above) has 30 days to complete the registration process or they forfeit the name.

Q So what exactly are the requirements for creating a new, valid screen name?
A Bungie.net screen names can be up to 16 characters long and can include both letters and numbers. However, a screen name must begin with a letter. The use of any other characters is not permitted. Spaces can be used but they are not used to determine uniqueness by the system. Also, space can?t be used at the beginning or the end of your screen name and you can?t use two or more spaces together. ?Mr Chief? is ok, but ?Mr Chief? is not valid.

Q What do I do if I still have questions about this .NET Passport process?
A If you have questions regarding .NET Passport itself, you should visit the Microsoft .NET Passport Q&A page located here. The .NET Passport main home page can be found here.

Specific questions regarding Bunige.net can sometimes be answered in our forums or you can send an email to feedback@bungie.com.

Q So that?s it? There?s nothing else I should know?
A Nope, that?s it. It?s really a simple process. Even our own test monkeys were able to create a .NET Passport and a Bungie.net account in a matter of minutes (when they weren?t busy grooming themselves). Once we unleash the full feature set of the new and improved Bungie.net, you?ll be glad you?ve got a .NET Passport so you don?t miss out on the action.
