Notes and Disclaimer: This is by no means the end all authority when it comes to Jabber and Subnova; it would be safer to call it a general idea, I suppose.

Jabber, Subnova, and You

1.0 Jabber

2.0 Subnova and Jabber

3.0 Thanks

1.0 Jabber

Here we will learn a few things about Jabber, some of the Jabber clients out there, and what you can do with Jabber.

1.1 What is "Jabber"

Jabber is ( in their own words ):

Jabber is best known as "the Linux of instant messaging" -- an open, secure, ad-free alternative to consumer IM services like AIM, ICQ, MSN, and Yahoo. Under the hood, Jabber is a set of streaming XML protocols and technologies that enable any two entities on the Internet to exchange messages, presence, and other structured information in close to real time.

Now that isn't too hard to understand, is it?

1.2 Where can I find this Jabber thing?

Thankfully, Peer already found some Jabber clients out there that do what Subnova needs it to do. If you are using Mac OS X, then check out AdiumX. If you are using Windows, then give Exodus a look. [[ You can now also use the Java interface so you don't have to download anything, thanks for that Peer (edited: MS) ]]

1.3 So I have Jabber, now what?

Now you can connect to the various jabber servers around; and if you picked up Adium or Exodus, you can use them instead of your current AIM client (you know, so you have less programs running... its a good thing, really). You'll want to read up on the client you have to know it's full potential.

2.0 Subnova and Jabber

Now let us dig into what Jabber does for Subnova...

2.1 What does Subnova use Jabber for?

There is a few things that made Jabber so appealing to Subnova, and if Peer ever answers my questions, I'll let you know what they are...

Right now, when you create an account in Subnova's Jabber network, you also create an account for Subnova, thus letting you rankwhore with best of them.

Your avatar in Jabber also becomes your avatar on Subnova, letting you give that little touch of home to your contributions to Subnova.

You can also open a chat dialog with other Subnovans who have been good enough to get on Jabber. You don't even need to populate a 'friends list' as all users are displayed.

2.2 Alright, sign me up.

Now we get you an account with Subnova's Jabber network. Open up your client and create a new Jabber account. (This may be a good time to point out that you may want to read up on your client, and how it works...)

The format for your Jabber ID with Subnova is as follows:

      username@jabber.subnova.com

Hopefully it is obvious that you would want to put your handle in place of username... but just in case it is not, this would be the snide comment that would let you know.

3.0 Thanks

I would just like to take a moment and thank those that helped with this little... thing...

huh... no one helped me with this... I guess I'll just thank Peer for Subnova...
