Beyond Good and Evil

You know, Ubi Soft is becoming quite the Xbox developer. What with such games under their belt as Rainbow Six 3, Prince of Persia, Splinter Cell and it's up coming Sequel, the Ghost Recon series, and Far Cry (it's Xbox port) looking better everyday, they are quickly becoming some of the best Xbox developers out there. While sales for this action RPG are far from stellar, this game rocks, and at 20 bucks (for every system!) it is well worth the cash.

This game has a very Zelda esque feel to it. It's like a futuristic Zelda, and even the controls feel something akin to Zelda. Auto-jumping? Check. Find the heart container to earn another health guage? Check. Take a boat to get almost every where in Hyllis? Check.

In BG&E you assume the role of Jade. A young photographer with a nack for taking great pics. The beginning of the game initially takes place on Hillys (pronounced hillis). A world being attacked by the alien DomZ. The Alpha sections are the ones fighting back the DomZ... or so you think. The game takes you straight into the action. Without so much as a tutorial, and a 30 second cutscene for a background story. That's not bad though. I say it's not because figuring out the controls is a sinch, and after about 15 minutes of playing, you pretty much know what's going on.

The story, which involves, what else? The government (well not fully) is actually really good. I can't really say to much about it bcause it would give most of it away. Lets just say that the whole government is not against you for once.

The game design though is where BG&E really succeds though. The puzzles are not mind bendingly difficult, there isn't much back tracking, and there aren't many loading points. Levels are fun to play and they never get frustating enough to make you want to stop playing. Level desing is quite clever, and you talking sidekick pig Uncle Pey'j (pronounced page) is not completely incompetant. He is actually pretty useful, and necessary to beat some bosses. Later on you'll run into Double H, but saying anymore would also give away some spoilers.

Gameplay is a mix of platforming, stealth action, and straight up hack n' slash. The controlls, which are rock solid, are quite simple to master. Left trigger to crouch, Right to run. D-pad to switch items, and black button to use them, and Y to use the camra. A is the standard action button (push buttons, take pictures, etc.). And it is as simple as that. When an enemy spots you (or vice versa) you automatically pull out your weapon. Which, though useful, is severly underpowered. The animation is also well done. Everything looks good and performs smoothly (though not as good as PoP's).

The voice acting and script, here are great. The voices match perfectly, and the dialouge is awesome. Sometimes funny, sometimes serious (wait til Uncle Pey'j explains how his boost boots work).

Over all this game rocks. Good gameplay, lush graphics, great story. Action adventure fans can't go wrong here, and at $20 it is a excellent deal. Sadly when it's all said and done there isn't really much enticing you to go back and play, and at a scant 10 hours, easily beatable in a few days if you do it right.
