/news/?cat=Second LifeWell, Philip Linden has broken the news that Linden Lab can't "afford" to keep updating the worldmap's UUID images.
Lex: Hmm, what an interesting problem. We had never contemplated the idea of someone hacking the viewer to get access to the UUID's for the map tile. So, the problem is that the existing system isn't scalable - essentially LL is covering the bill to inject new UUID's every few days into our asset system. We are expanding our own storage system to hold the map tile data, and of course greatly increasing the update frequency (which is good for all SL users) then would cost us even more if we keep this system going.

So it seems to me that we shouldn't keep pushing map tiles into our system as assets, even to keep your system running. LL (and by extension all SL users) is paying for this cost, and it certainly wasn't an intended use. Wouldn't you tend to agree?

This means that all your products that you sell in-world will no longer be able to display current map image data without someone else footing L$10 per image uploaded.

Sorry, everyone. But Subnova can't afford US$1,200 in upload costs every time the map images are updated on SLURL.com. Apparently, LL can't either (I wonder who they pay that L$10 to for the uploads).

I'll keep my system online in the event someone decides to change their mind... but seeing as how the images haven't updated in the past month yet... I think what we have now is the end.

/news/?cat=Second LifeI had an idea for a new feature inSL.
The idea uses existing voice technology to allow a prim to be a spatial sound source for the streaming audio for a parcel.
One of the downsides to parcel media is that it's ever-present... you hear it from everywhere all the time. For realism, it would be far better to be able to have the audio respect spatial sources. To do this, you would need to be able to define a prim as being a "spatial parcel audio source" via a checkbox in the prim editor. Then, in the parcel media settings, there would be a checkbox that restricts the parcel audio to be only heard from defined spatial source prims. This would need to function for either parcel music or parcel media, so that televisions could be the source of the sound of the stream.

No longer would you be blasted with the sound from a video you cannot see when entering a parcel that has this feature turned on.

/news/?cat=Second LifeBreaking News from Subnova RPN
The Subnova Citadel in Second Life has come under attack, not from a horde of vicious von Neumann eschew self replicating machines known as the replicators but instead from a bunch of bored and crazy foxes and a wolf who are residents of Subnova. Firstly one of the foxes by the name of Kim preformed a bazaar procedure on a gate turning a Milky Way gate into a Pegasus gate which was later confirmed cannon by a promotional shot for Stargate Atlantis Season 5 in which a Pegasus gate had a Milky Way dialling ring.

Mills and Kim then preformed a variety of experiments on the gate which had been converted into a Pegasus then Wolfie came along and spotted the gate and informed them both of the botched promotional artwork confirming that the gate is actually cannon (http://www.gateworld.net/gallery/albums/atl season5/Cast-Photos/normal cast season5 17.jpg).

Kim then got bored with the gate and started constructing small man cannon which was used to bombard Stargate Command with avatars and cannon balls.
Wolfie having been inspired by the man cannon to become inspired and begin construction of an even larger catapult. A catapult aimed at the Subnova Citadel Wolfie and Kim then started firing various objects at the citadel ranging from giant metal balls, a puddle jumper, and various bits of debris. Lex was informed of the attack so Wolfie launched a load of toilet paper at the Citadel in response.

Mills managed to get to the citadel and raise the shield but it was too late, the eastern side of Keystone and the Subnova Citadel were a toilet paper covered wasteland.
Mills sat in the control chair watching as various people attempting to tease the anti flight system were trapped like flies within reach of the drones. Mills eventually lowered the shield and returned to the location of the catapult.
KayRUle, another fox had already arrived at the catapult and joined in with launching objects at the Citadel. After having so much fun Wolfie decided that the best idea was to permanently mount the catapult in Keystone facing the citadel.

A few Subnovans in Second Life were bored so we decided to test the physics engine. Havoc4 when combined with a catapult is quite good.

Alteran Storm AKA Mills Gazov reporting for Subnova RP News network

/news/?cat=Second LifeIt all started with a Subnovan dwelling in the virtual world of Second Life(TM) by the name of Kim attempting to get to the citadel via stargate. Chevron 8 would not lock so he took a look into the subspace logs for the gate network and found something alarming; someone had connected the gate located in Subnova Citadel to a black hole.

After a bit of panic Kim immediately contacted the other subnovans who were online at the time, Mills and Peter. Mills was able to put Kim into contact with Lex but unfortunately the connection to Lex's remote cyber brain was down at the time. Peter was able to drop the gate connection long enough for the location of the black hole to be discovered.

While attempting to dial out from the Subnova gate what appeared to be someone less familiar with the gate network appeared and accused Mills of messing with the DHD preventing people from dialling into Subnova. Mills was able to explain that it was a black hole and what a black hole was causing the person to wander off.

Kim proceeded to the location that the black hole was located at. The black hole was contained by an 8th dimensional plywood cube located inside of the event horizon of an active stargate. He was able to snap an image that was sent to Lex for retrieval when the connection to his remote cyber brain was re-established. The cube had a message which was written with poor grammar and spelling consistent with a replicator, the message was: “WE ARE THE COVENANT, WE ARE DETERMINATE TO WON, WE WILL GIVE OUR EXIGENCE LATER, DO NOT TRY TO FIND US, WE MAKE SURE TO HAVE PROOF AGAINST OTHER PPL THAT WE DON’T LIKE, DEATH TO SUBNOVA DEATH TO ALTERAN STARGATE NETWORK”

Wolfie came online and was given a report of the situation and decided to detonate the gate which was located at the black hole. Activating the gate destroyer powered by the generators in the citadel he was able to detonate the remote gate rendering the 8th dimensional cube useless.

Later on both Lex and Zach appeared and were also given a status report and decided to bring the replicator disruptor online disabling the replicator that created the black hole which. But the nature of replicators has most likely reformed elsewhere in the Second Life world and is replicating once again although due to the anti replicator field in Subnova, the surrounding regions and the subspace network used by the gates the replicator is unable to launch another attack against Subnova

The replicator that created the black hole is linked to a replicator collective that has attacked Subnova, Avalonia and The Eternals in the past.

When talking about the attack on IRC 3of9 suggested that I write about the events in a semi role play style in an attempt to bring more activity to Subnova so I have attempted it.

/news/?cat=Second LifeThe SGMI is reporting bad data right now.

Recent grid server updates have cause some strange behavior in the data aquisition software we're running.
I hope to have time to rework the software tonight and tomorrow to improve self-repairing of the database.

More information will be posted as it becomes available.

Update: 20080313.231626
The system has been manually refreshed, and is now reporting valid data.
Work continues to make the system fully automated and handle grid failures better.

/news/?cat=Second LifeThe Subnova SGMI Interface is returning NULL keys right now.

We're working to resolve this as soon as we can. Stay tuned.

For those of you who aren't familiar with it, the SGMI returns the UUID of the in-world map image of a region.
http://www.subnova.com/secondlife/api/map.php?sim=Sonamu returns the map of the Sonamu region.

Update 20080107.212258
The system is now returning proper UUID keys once again. Sorry for the downtime.

/news/?cat=Second LifeYep, at approximately 2035UTC, Second Life broke the 50,000 users online at once mark.

Somewhere, a router burst into flames.
